On Thursday, September 7, 2017 East Harlem Preservation partnered with the Justice Center en El Barrio, the East Harlem/El Barrio Community Land Trust to co-sponsor a forum for candidates seeking to represent East Harlem and South Bronx residents in the 8th NYC Councilmanic District.
Co-moderator Nilsa Orama (East Harlem/El Barrio Community Land Trust and Community Board 11) questioned candidates on housing issues such as permanent affordability, rezoning, homelessness, NYCHA, community land trusts, vacancy warehousing, tenant rights, and gentrification.
Karla Reyes (Justice Center) also questioned candidates on civil rights issues such as shelter warrant sweeps, fair access to public space, illegal “gang” raids and property seizures, selective enforcement of “vagrancy” &“quality-of-life” ordinances, and harassment of immigrants and street vendors.
Candidates in attendance were Tamika Mapp and Robert J. Rodriguez. Diana Ayala was unable to attend.
